Department of Anesthesiologyat UF
Research Opportunities

The department provides opportunities to residents, fellows, and medical students to participate in basic and clinical research related to the field of anesthesiology. As this field is broad, so is the scope of the various research projects underway. Resident research projects are elective in nature and may be completed as a research block in the CA3 year for those choosing the clinical scientist track.  Alternatively, research may be completed during and around clinical rotations, particularly if the project is clinical in nature. Resident initiated research or resident participation in ongoing projects is welcomed, encouraged, and supported. This approach has been very successful, and residents from our department have consistently presented more papers at the Annual Gulf-Atlantic Residents' Conference than residents from any other program. Over the last four years, more than sixty residents presented their work at this meeting. In addition, residents also present their work at the most prestigious national meetings. It is the faculty's goal to help interested residents experience the entire research process from asking the question, through designing the experiment and analyzing the data, to presenting an abstract and writing a scientific paper.

The Department of Anesthesiology has a basic research laboratory located on the fifth floor of the Medical Sciences Building near the departmental offices. This 1700 sq. ft. laboratory directed by Michael Banner, PhD. is the home of projects ranging from the effects of anesthetic agents on coronary blood flow to basic research in cell and molecular biology to design and analysis of ventilation devices. There are five complete polygraph recording systems, respiratory monitoring equipment including a blood gas analysis machine, an adult and pediatric simulated lung, and all the computer equipment needed for data acquisition and analysis. On an average day, two to three projects are being conducted in the main laboratory by our faculty and residents. Our two full-time laboratory technicians support these projects. In addition, our computer support division provides advice about use of computers in the laboratory and supports the statistical analysis needs of the investigators. Access to MEDLINE is also available in the laboratory. In addition to the main laboratory, several satellite labs serve the needs of individual investigators working in areas such as neuromuscular physiology, nanotechnology, anesthetic effects on immune function, anesthetic effects on gene transcription in brain cells, and anesthetic effects on mortality (long-term).  .

Applicants interested in research may contact either Donn M. Dennis, MD, or Christoph N. Seubert, MD, PhD.  They may be reached at our main Department phone number, 352-392-3441.
