PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ANESTHESIOLOGY
RESIDENCIES - EFFECTIVE 2003, Revised 2004

In order that you may better understand the reasons for the structure and function of your residency program and judge for yourself whether or not the program is meeting the stated requirements of the Residency Review Committee for Anesthesiology, please find below the Program Requirements for Residencies in Anesthesiology that are currently in effect. These program requirements will change in the next year, and when they do, we will provide each of you with a copy of the new requirements as well as update this web site. As you review the subsequent portions of this manual that describe your residency education program, please keep these requirements in mind.  If at any time you feel that any of these requirements are NOT being met for you, please contact Dr. Mahla or Dr. Gravenstein as soon as possible.

According to the ACGME, resident physicians in general are expected to:

1. Develop a personal program of learning to foster continued professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.

2. Participate in safe, effective, and compassionate patient care, under supervision, commensurate with their level of advancement and responsibility.

3. Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of their program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.

4. Participate on appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and /or patient care.

5. Submit to the program director or to a designated institutional official at least annually, confidential written evaluations of the faculty and of the educational experiences.

By providing these program requirements to you, we are enabling you to analyze for yourself whether or not your program meets the expectations of the Residency Review Committee for Anesthesiology.

Common Program Requirements:  The following program requirements are common to all specialty and subspecialty training programs.  These requirements come into effect July 2003 and are IN ADDITION TO any specialty specific requirements.

To accomplish these goals specifically for anesthesiology, an accredited program must meet the following requirements:

If you have any questions about your program with respect to Common or Specialty Specific Program Requirements, please see Dr. Mahla.
