Survival Information
- Beepers:
Permanent beeper assignments will be made for all residents. If beepers are
lost, the resident will be responsible for replacement costs.
- Checks
- Travel and
Reimbursement: Travel and reimbursement checks will be available
for pick-up in Room 2036.
- Dress Code:
Appropriate standards of dress are required for all housestaff who provide
care to the patients of Shands Hospital. White coats shall be worn over appropriate
street clothes that are consistent with a professional appearance. Name tags
must be worn at all times. Scrub suits may NEVER be worn outside Shands
Hospital.
- Ear Pieces:
Ear pieces are provided by the Department. You will be notified of the date
and time for your fitting.
- Housestaff
Affairs: The Office of Housestaff Affairs was established to offer
support and a voice for housestaff and serves as a clearinghouse for information.
The office is located in Room 6232 (265-0787). Ms. Sharron Wallace
is the administrative director of the housestaff office and is the General
Housestaff Advocate for the institution.
- A Housestaff
Lounge is located in Room 6240 (code to enter=6789). The room is
stocked with snacks and drinks, a TV and computers. Please do
not remove large quantities of food/ drink items to bring downstairs.
Food and drink located in that area is meant to be consumed in that area.
Additional services offered by Housestaff Affairs include a monthly
advisory group, personal services (housing, real estate), discount coupons
to local businesses and major Florida attractions, and a monthly newsletter.
An exercise facility is also located adjacent to the lounge in room 6236 (code
to enter =6789).
- Lab Coats:
The Department will initially furnish you with two lab coats. Additional lab
coats may be furnished at a later date if necessary.
- Lockers:
You have been assigned a locker in the Shands Operating Room Suite: The number
of lockers available is limited; therefore, it will be necessary to share
a locker. You will be given a slip indicating your locker number and combination.
Any questions concerning these lockers should be referred to Ricky McHugh
in Room 2043 (5-0077).
- Mail Boxes:
You have been assigned a mail box in the Residents' Library for use during
your training. This box should be checked frequently, especially during outside
rotations, and should be kept neat.
- Meals:
Meal tickets are issued to residents on call who are required to stay in the
hospital. Residents taking call in the SICU will receive eight $1 meal
tickets per call. All residents on the OR call schedule (mole team OR
late stay) will receive 16 meal tickets per rotation. Residents on Acute Pain
Call and VA rotations are not eligible for Shands meal tickets. Residents
taking call on OB will receive eight $1 meal tickets per 24 hour call, 4 if
covering the OB mole rotation, and 1 for covering OB rotation during the day
(8am to 6pm). Your meal tickets may be used at any time,
not just when you are on call. They can be used in the Shands Cafeteria, the
Shands Food Court (Hovan, TCBY, Wendy's, and Pizza Inn) the Sun Terrace, Einstein
Bagels, Chic Fil-A, and the Faculty Dining Room. You will be asked to pay
the amount over the limit when you arrive at the cashier. Meal tickets are
issued by Judy Gordon, the Staff Assistant in the Anesthesia Clerical Office
(Room 2036), at the beginning of each rotation for the entire rotation. It
is each resident's responsibility to pick up his/her meal tickets from Judy
and sign the envelope.
- Name Tags:
All incoming personnel will be furnished with a GATOR 1 card which
must be worn at all times.

Parking:
- Resident's parking decal may be purchased
for a full year running from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 (purchase of
decal available the end of June). The cost is $ YTBD for the full
year. You may alternatively purchase your decal for a 1-semester period
(4 months) for $ YTBD. Residents may park in the upper level of the
West Parking Garage.
- While you are on a VA rotation and
assigned to the VA operating room, you will be issued a temporary parking
card by the clerical staff at the VA. These temporary cards are to be returned
to LuAnn Cox (Dr. Lobato's administrative assistant) immediately following
the rotation.
- Detailed parking information may be obtained
from the Parking
Office Web Site.
- Personnel
List: Personnel information is updated frequently and is available
via the Departmental database. To ensure accurate lists are available, residents
should periodically print new lists. If changes need to be made to your personal
information, please contact the clerical office.
- Shuttle Van
Service: The Shands Shuttle Van provides complimentary service
for hospital employees requiring transportation to outlying parking areas.
The van leaves the front circle every ten minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.,
and 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. from outlying parking areas to the Hospital.
- Sleep Room:
The anesthesia sleep rooms are located in Rooms 2228 and 2230 and are strictly
for the use of anesthesiology Shands OR on-call personnel. If you have any
problems regarding this room, please contact Joanie Nyland at 5-0077.
- Telephones:
Department phones are to be used for business calls. All long distance personal
calls should be charged to your personal credit card. During non-business
hours, Departmental phones are answered by the Shands Message Center.
- University
of Florida Libraries: The main University of Florida College of
Medicine Library is located in the Communicore Building which is adjacent
to the Chandler A. Stetson Hall. Your staff I.D. card will extend library
privileges to you for all of the University of Florida libraries located throughout
the campus.
