Anesthesiology Course/Clerkship Learning Objectives

1.    Professionalism

Learning Objectives:

2.    Patient Care: Procedural

Learning Objectives:

§         Demonstrate ability to perform intravenous catheterization

§         Demonstrate ability to perform airway management (evaluation, mask ventilation and intubation)

Learning Activity:

§         Manikin and simulator-based practice

§         Instruction and practice under the direction of faculty and housestaff during clinical activities

Evaluation Method:

§         Direct observation by faculty and housestaff using evaluation form (attached)

3.    Medical Knowledge: Core Discipline

Learning Objectives:

§         Demonstrate the ability to perform the initial assessment and management of a patient in respiratory and/or cardiovascular arrest.

§         Demonstrate understanding of fluid management in resuscitation.

§         Preoperative evaluation of a patient including medical condition, physical status, airway examination, appropriate preoperative testing and the impact of anesthesia and surgery on their condition.

§         General tenets of intraoperative medicine including monitoring (selection, steps in placement and basic interpretation of invasive monitors) and anesthetic options.

§         Recognition and management of common post-operative complications including pain, hypotension, respiratory depression, and myocardial ischemia.

§         Basic mechanical ventilation and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

§         The pharmacology of anesthetic, sedative, narcotic and vasoactive medications.

§         Cardiovascular physiology and the basics of invasive monitoring techniques.
