EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENT

Look at the "Remember when...?" brochure at this website ( ¬ click on UF Seal to see the brochure) and think about those days you spent at the University of Florida, Department of Anesthesiology.   Hopefully those days when you worked hard and learned a lot made your career a bountiful and happy one.    There is now an educational endowment established for the department that honors those two teachers, T.W. and Perk, who gave so much to students, residents, nurses,  anesthesiology faculty, and colleagues in other departments.

What is an endowment?  How does an endowment help the department?

An endowment is a sum of money donated to an entity such as the U of FL Department of Anesthesiology.   Endowments may be used for the benefit and advancement of the department.   The gifts to the Andersen/Perkins Endowment are restricted to educational purposes within the department.  Examples of such purposes are special projects to further resident education, starter grants for research projects, distinguished visiting professor program, and other venues that promote education of residents and faculty within the Department of Anesthesiology.  The funds will be used for educational purposes where funds are not available from the Dean or the hospital.  The Dean or hospital cannot require the department to use endowment funds for areas normally funded by the Dean or hospital.  Thus, these funds will broaden the ability of the department to provide superior educational experiences within the department.

A minimum gift of $20,000 is required to create an endowed fund at the University of Florida Foundation.  Once the contributions have reached $100,000 or more they are eligible for state match.   The State of Florida has established the MAJOR GIFTS TRUST FUND that provides matching funds for endowments for academic purpose.  For example, contributions of $100,000 receive a matching grant equal to 50%.   Thus, the $100,000 becomes $150,000 when matched by the State.     State match increases with greater contributions.  The ranges of State match are as follows:

OUR ORIGINAL GOAL WAS TO RAISE $600,000 FROM PRIVATE DONORS AND WITH THE STATE MATCH THE ENDOWMENT WOULD HAVE A VALUE OF $1 MILLION.  WE HAVE NOW EXCEEDED THAT GOAL (see below).  WE WELCOME FURTHER DONATIONS WHICH WOULD MAKE THIS FUND EVEN MORE VALUABLE TO FUTURE ANESTHESIOLOGISTS TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA.

The principle of the endowment remains in perpetuity for the sole use of the Department of Anesthesiology.  Earnings on the principle in the amount of four percent are available annually for the department's special educational purposes.  Thus, the principle remains intact.  If the fund earns over four percent in any given year these earnings are added to the endowment and the principle grows .

How can one make contributions?
Various ways of gifting are available.   However, only gifts of cash and securities or gifts that result in immediate cash are eligible for State Match Funds.   Wills, insurance, and the like will be eligible for the match when the cash from such are realized by the endowment fund.

Donors giving $2000 or more a year are recognized through the University of Florida President's Council.
