A.
Evaluation of Residents by faculty: The Clinical Competence Committee of the
Department of Anesthesiology consists of faculty members chosen by the Chairman
and Associate Chair for Education who are tasked with collating and analyzing
all of your evaluations and presenting the evaluations to the American Board
of Anesthesiology in the form of a Clinical Competence Report. This report is
sent every six months and forms the basis by which the American Board of Anesthesiology
grants you credit for clinical training. An actual ABA form is shown in the
following pages for your information and review. You are evaluated by the faculty
using our web-based resident evaluation system on a weekly basis. Any faculty
member at Shands, FSC, or the VA who worked with you on a case will be sent
an e-mail indicating that he/she needs to complete a web
evaluation form of your performance. The results of these evaluations and
all comments are stored in a secure database which is then made available to
the committee to help it prepare its reports to the ABA. The committee meets
every three months to review your performance, but information is actually only
sent to the ABA every six months, covering the preceding six month time period.
Your faculty advisor will also receive the information generated by the committee
at its quarterly meetings and will help you understand the basis for any of
the committees decisions regarding your performance. Your faculty member is
REQUIRED to meet with you at least twice a year to review your performance.
Quarterly meetings may not occur if no problems are identified, but you can
feel free to meet with your advisor about your performance at any time. If your advisor does not contact you by the 1st week in January or the 3rd week in June, please contact them to set up an advising meeting. If you
wish to meet about your performance at times other than the semi-annual evaluations,
you need only make an appointment with your advisor. He or she always
has access to the latest computer database information. You also have direct
access to the results of your web-based evaluations at any time. The results
are reported numerically with:
1= Above Expected Level of Competence -
reserved for outstanding performance at all levels
2= At Expected Level of Competence - most residents
will receive this evaluation score
3= Below Expected Level of Competence -
Clearly below average for peer group, but some aspects of performance are acceptable.
4 = Unacceptable Performance
Any time you receive a below expected or unacceptable score, the web-based reporting system will indicate this to you. If you do not understand why you may have received such an evaluation, you can contact Dr. Mahla or your advisor at any time, and the reasons for the poor evaluation will be shared directly with you.
You may review your evaluations at anytime by accessing our Departmental Application Web Page. You will be able to review your numeric evaluation scores for each rotation. In addition, you will be able to review a trend plot of your performance compared to other residents at your same training level. This page is bookmarked on every web browser in the library. The page is:
https://needle.anest.ufl.edu/department.
When you get there, you will need to LOGIN. To do so, enter your Departmental
e-mail address (generally firstinitiallastname@anest.ufl.edu (e.g. jshmoe@anest.ufl.edu) and your password.
When you first begin in the program, your initial system password is the first
letter of your last name (lowercase) followed immediately by the last 4 digits
of your social security number. The first time you LOGIN, you will be
told your password has expired. and you will be instructed to change your
password. You should then be set to go. For security purposes, you
will periodically be asked to change your password.
B. Please carefully review BOTH the ABA form and the Departmental forms. They will give you a great deal of insight into what both the Department and the ABA expect of residents in training. Please note the essential attributes. If any of them are unsatisfactory, your overall evaluation for the six month period will also be unsatisfactory regardless of other aspects of your performance. Please review the Housestaff Manual section about the ABA and Board Certification to understand the significance of an unsatisfactory overall clinical competence evaluation. This reporting is now done on-line. You are entitled to receive a printed copy of the report sent to the ABA if you like. Your advisor will have one during your meetings with him /her.
C. March 1st is the date by which residents will be notified of either likely promotion to the following level or non-renewal of contract for the following academic year.
PLEASE NOTE: During the academic year 2007-8, the Department will be implementing a totally new evaluation system associated with the New Innovations Residency Data Management System. Please be patient with us as the system is implemented. The evaluative content will not change - just how and where it is entered.
