PGY-1 (Clinical Base) Residents
Jennifer Dagen
Dr. Dagen received her undergraduate degree in
Molecular Biology from the University
of Texas at Dallas. Following
this, she attended the University
of Texas Medical School
at San Antonio
and will receive her medical degree in May. Outside of medicine, she
enjoys cooking, reading, swimming, and watching sporting events.
Mary Herman
Dr. Herman
received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin.
Following this, she completed both a Masters degree and a PhD in Physiology at
the University of
Wisconsin in Madison. She also
attends medical school at the University
of Wisconsin in Madison and will receive
her degree in May. She enjoys camping, biking, gardening and swimming
(and on the side, is an assistant basketball coach for her daughter's team!).
Linda Le
Dr. Le received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Following this, she entered the Medical College of Wisconsin and will complete her medical
degree this May. Linda is an accomplished pianist and likes to write
fiction ("would love to write a psychological thriller one day").
Scott Maynard
Dr. Maynard received his undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from West
Virginia University in Morgantown, West
Virginia. Following this, he entered Marshall University
School of Medicine in Huntington,
West Virginia and will receive
his medical degree this May. Scott enjoys hunting, fishing, biking, and
softball.
Jochen (Danny) Muehlschlegel
Dr. Muehlschlegel completed his medical
training at Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet in Freiburg, Germany. He has also spent significant
time in the United States
completing medical training at USF, Stanford, Harvard, and LSU. Danny is
very interested in skiing and has competed internationally in this sport.
He is also interested in bicycle racing, water skiing, windsurfing, tennis,
soccer, computers, and has significant experience with classical guitar.
Jeffrey Shore
Dr. Shore
completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor.
Following this, he entered the Medical
College of Wisconsin and will
receive his medical degree this May. Jeffrey enjoys sailing, basketball,
tennis, lifting weights, and going to musical concerts.
Matthew Stoner
Dr. Stoner completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at Butler
University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Following this, he entered Indiana University School
of Medicine and will receive his medical degree this May. Matthew enjoys playing golf, billiards, and just being outside on a
nice day.
Sinan Yavas
Dr. Yavas completed his undergraduate degree
in Anthropology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Following this, he entered Vanderbilt University School
of Medicine and will receive his medical degree this May. Sinan enjoys traveling, community service, and reading
subject matter related to the social sciences.

Zachary Bird, M.D.
Dr. Bird received
a degree in Biology from Oakland University in Rochester, Minnesota. Following
this, he attended Wayne
State University
School of Medicine and
received his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine, he is
interested in cooking, computers, basketball, travel, and boating.

Timothy Cahill, M.D.
Dr. Cahill
received a degree in Biochemistry from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Following
this, he attended the University
of Iowa College of
Medicine and received his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine,
he is interested in golf, running, hiking, basketball and traveling.
Nicole Dobija, M.D.
Dr.
Dobija received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann
Arbor, Michigan. Following this, she attended Dental School
at Howard University receiving her degree in
1998. Following this, she enrolled in
the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program here at the University of Florida
and received her medical degree this May.
While completing her Anesthesiology training in her Oral Surgery
Program, Nicole saw the light and transferred to our training program! Nicole loves to teach and is interested in
providing anesthesia care for underdeveloped countries. She enjoys running, rowing, hiking, biking,
reading and travel.
Joshua Fuhrmeister,
M.D.
Dr. Fuhrmeister
received a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
Following this, he attended the University
of Iowa College of
Medicine and received his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine,
he is interested in reading, singing, exercising, water and snow skiing, hiking
and camping.
James Graybill, M.D.
Dr. Graybill received a degree in English
from Ohio State University.
Following this, he attended Wright
State University
and received his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine, he is
interested in tennis, golf, softball, chess, weight-lifting, World War II
history and politics.
Ehijele
(“Heej”) Omoike, M.D.
Dr. Omoike
received a degree in Microbiology from the University of Illinois.
Following this, he attended the University
of Illinois College of
Medicine and received his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine,
he is interested in bowling, football, basketball, "dining out", and
surfing the internet.
Sanjeev Patel, M.D.
Dr. Patel received his medical degree in
July, 1999 from the University
of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.
Since then, he has completed postgraduate training in both medicine and surgery
at the University
of Edinburgh.
Currently, he is training in Anesthesiology at the Birmingham Medical
School Teaching Hospital
in England. Outside of medicine, he is interested in
squash (the sport – sorry, we don’t have this in Florida!), tennis (we do have this),
swimming, golf, traveling, and he enjoys the fine arts – particularly painting
– and has had works displayed in local exhibitions.

Erik Pershau, D.O.
Dr. Perschau
received a degree in Genetics from Texas
A&M University.
Following this, he attended Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine and received his
medical degree this May. Dr. Perschau is the
second resident to join UF's program whose father is
a graduate of this residency training program. Outside of medicine, he is
interested in backpacking, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, flying and
woodworking.
Daniel Zaitman,
M.D.
Dr. Zaitman
received a degree in Biology from Florida
International University.
Following this, he attended Finch
University and received
his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine, he is interested in
jogging, cycling, hiking, fishing, and scuba diving. He also enjoys coin
collecting, chess, and cooking.
PGY-2 (CA-1) Residents Joining us for the first time in Academic Year 2002-3
Todd Horowitz
Dr. Horowitz
received a degree in Psychology from the University of Florida.
Following this, he attended Nova
Southeastern University
College of Osteopathic
Medicine and will receive his medical degree this May. Outside of
medicine, Todd is interested in computers and weight training.
Li Ma
Dr. Ma completed her medical training at Shandong
Medical University in Jinan, China.
She came to the US in
1991 and completed a PhD in Pharmacology and Neuroscience at Columbia University. Last year, she completed a PGY-1 year in Medicine
at the Univ. of Massachusetts. Her husband, Harry Zhu,
will be joining our faculty in the Spring following
completion of residency training in anesthesiology at Thomas
Jefferson University
in Philadelphia. Li enjoys family
activities with her husband and daughter.
Matthew Morgan
Dr. Morgan received a
degree in Biology from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Following this he received his medical degree
from the Medical College of Georgia. He has now just completed a transitional
internship at Eisenhower
Army Medical
Center in Augusta, Georgia
and joins us for his residency training in Anesthesiology. Matt’s interests include
running, acoustic guitar, and reading.
John Newton
Dr. Newton
received a degree in Biology from the University of Georgia.
Following this, he attended the Medical
College of Georgia and
will receive his medical degree this May. Beginning this July, he will be
a preliminary medicine intern here at UF. Outside of medicine, he is
interested in the ministry, Boy Scouts of America, weight-lifting, and
swing-dancing.
Chad Purdom
Dr. Purdom received a degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida. Following this, he
attended the University
of Miami School of
Medicine and will receive his medical degree this May. Beginning this
July, Chad
will be a preliminary surgery intern here at UF. Outside of Medicine, Chad
is interested in weight training and basketball.
Joanne Ramjohn
Dr. Ramjohn received a degree in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University.
Following this, she attended the University
of Florida College of
Medicine and will receive her medical degree this May. Beginning this
July, Joanne will be a preliminary surgery intern here at UF. Outside of
medicine, Joanne's interests include reading, jogging, dancing and the martial
arts.
Michael Robinson
No stranger to Gainesville, Dr. Robinson received a degree
in Biology from Kutztown
University in Pennsylvania. Following this, he attended Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine and
received his osteopathic degree in June, 2001.
He then completed his intern training at Frankford Hospital
in Philadelphia
and now joins us for Anesthesiology training.
His interests include traveling, martial arts, weight-lifting, and
exploring local communities.
John Santiago
Dr. Santiago received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois. Following this, he attended the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey and received his medical degree in May,
1998. He then completed a preliminary year in Surgery in Columbus, Ohio.
Since that time, he has been on Active Duty as a Flight Surgeon with the United States
Navy.
Timothy Stypinski
Dr. Stypinski received a degree in Biology from the University of Michigan. Following this, he
attended the University
of Michigan School of
Medicine and will receive his medical degree this May. Beginning this
July, Tim will be a preliminary surgery intern here at UF. Outside of
medicine, his interests include painting and swimming.
Samuel Velez
Dr. Velez
received a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas
at Austin.
Following this, he attended Ponce
School of Medicine in Puerto Rico and will receive his medical degree this
May. Beginning this July, Samuel will be a preliminary surgery intern
here at UF. Outside of medicine, he enjoys rock climbing, scuba diving,
softball, jogging and art.
Gloria Walters
Dr. Walters
received a degree in Art and Architecture from Princeton University.
Subsequently, she received a Master's Degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia. She then attended Eastern Virginia Medical
School and will receive
her medical degree this May. Outside of medicine, Gloria has many
interests including Russian, medicinal plants and gardening, paper-making,
book-making, and graphical design.
Adam Wendling
Dr. Wendling received a degree in the Combined
Sciences from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. He then attended medical
school at the Northeastern
Ohio Universities
College of Medicine and
will receive his medical degree this May. Outside of medicine, Adam has
interests in weight lifting, photography, and numerous outdoor activities.
Mark Wesley
Dr.
Wesley completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Central
Florida.
He received his medical degree from the University of South Florida
College of Medicine in 1995. Following residency training in Pediatrics at
the University of
South Florida, Mark has
been in private practice in Florida. Mark is interested in pediatric
anesthesiology and perhaps a fellowship in pediatric critical care. He enjoys snow skiing, fishing and traveling.
Rex Williams
Dr. Williams received his
undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Mississippi. He also completed his medical training at the
University of Mississippi and then joined the
Department of Anesthesiology at the University
of Mississippi. Following completion of six months of
clinical anesthesia training, Rex transferred here to the University of Florida and began
training with us in January 2003. Rex is married with two children, enjoys reading, Hapkido, crossword puzzles (lookout Dr. DePadua!) and
family activities.
PGY-3 Residents (CA-2)
Mohammad Abbasian, M.D.
Born in Tehran, Iran,
Mohammed attended the Tehran
University of Medical
Sciences for both undergraduate and graduate studies. He received his
M.D. degree in July, 1994. Mohammad
completed his clinical base year training at Shands in Jacksonville in the Anesthesiology training
program. He transfers here this July to
continue his residency training in Anesthesiology. Dr. Abbasian attended high school in the United States. Since medical school, he has been involved in
clinical research studying patients with rheumatoid arthritis. He has developed a particular interest in
anesthesiology – since his wife is already an anesthesiologist!!
Christian Barotti, M.D.
Born in Sao
Paulo, Brazil,
Chris attended undergraduate school at the University of Delaware.
Following that, he attended Jefferson Medical
College and received his M.D. degree in May, 2000. As one might surmise, Dr. Barotti enjoys
soccer and is a world traveler. He has
experienced alternative health care methods from his Brazilian and Japanese
grandparents. Interestingly, medical
school has actually taught him a deeper appreciation for these alternative
methods.
Jonathan Barry, M.D.
Born in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa,
Jonathan attended undergraduate school at Carleton College
in Minnesota.
Following that, he attended Northwestern University Medical School and received
his M.D. degree in May, 2000. Jonathan is interested in singing, magic, and backpacking. His interest in the arts spread into medicine
as well, and he was involved in several “arts-in-medicine” activities during
medical school. Jonathan is married to
Kristin Barry.
Daniel Berson, D.O.
Born in Passaic,
New Jersey, Daniel attended
undergraduate school at the University
of Texas at Austin. Following
that, he attended Nova Southeastern University and received his D.O. degree in
May, 2000. Given his osteopathic
background, Daniel starts his training with a strong leaning toward a career in
Chronic Pain Management. His hobbies
include water sports and weight lifting.
Juliet Burry, M.D.
Born
in Homestead, Florida, Juliet attended undergraduate school
at the University
of Florida College of
Pharmacy. Following that, she attended the University of Florida College of
Medicine and received her M.D. in May, 2000.
Following graduation, she completed a year in the Family Practice
training program here at the University
of Florida College of
Medicine. She joins us this July for her
anesthesiology training. Dr. Burry is
interested in traveling, cultural activities, dancing, and has participated in
a mini-triathlon.
Chai (C.J.)
Chang, M.D.
C.J.
received his undergraduate degree from the University of California
at Irvine. Following this, he completed his medical
training at the American
University of the Caribbean and received his degree in 1999. Since then, he has been training in an
Internal Medicine training program at the Maricopa Medical
Center, in Phoenix, Arizona. He is transferring to join our residency
program, and hopes to ultimately pursue a career in the academic setting. CJ is very interested in music and enjoys
playing the guitar.
Donald “Chip” Chipman, M.D.
Chip
completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Alabama
in 1992. Following this, he completed
graduate training in Developmental Biology before being accepted into medical
school at the University
of Alabama School of
Medicine. He receive
his medical degree in May, 2000 and began training in Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky
in Lexington. He is transferring to the specialty of
Anesthesiology and joins us this July.
Chip is particularly interested in children, pain management, and
critical care.
Olexy Chugay,
M.D.
Dr. Chugay completed his undergraduate and medical
training in the Ukraine
at the Kharkiv
State Medical
University in 1997. During school, he completed some clinical
research on the “Usage of Magnetic field in treating patients with arterial
occlusion of the lower extremities.”
Perhaps he should get to know Dr. Seeger!! Dr. Chugay comes to us from Arizona, where he
became acquainted with Isabelle Simoneau, one of our
former residents. Alex (as she calls
him) is a serious track enthusiast (decathlon).
He also enjoys other sports, hiking, camping, traveling, reading, and
computers.
W. Chace Conner, M.D.
Chace
received his undergraduate degree in Pre-Health Care Biology at Baylor University. Following this, he entered medical school at
the University of Texas
Medical Branch at Galveston
and received his degree in May, 2000.
Currently, he is a surgery intern at Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston. Chace is changing career directions and will
be joining us in July. His hobbies
include aviation, computer construction, physics, astronomy, guitar music,
science fiction / fantasy novels, and history.
Kelly (Munoz) Durrett, M.D.
Born
in Downey, California, Kelly attended undergraduate
school at California
State Polytechnic
University in Pomona, California.
Following that, she attended Creighton University School of Medicine and
received her M.D. degree in May, 2000.
She then completed her clinical base year training in the Anesthesiology
Program at Shands, Jacksonville,
and transfers here to continue her residency training. Kelly is interested in snow
skiing, scuba diving, golfing, hiking, fitness training, traveling, bowling,
tennis and animals.
Vance Elshire, M.D.
Born
in Billings, Montana, Vance attended undergraduate school
at Carroll College in Helena, Montana.
Following that, he attended Ross University School of Medicine and received his
M.D. degree in February, 2000. Vance
completed his clinical base year training in the Anesthesiology Program at
Shands, Jacksonville
and transfers to us this July to continue his residency training in
Anesthesiology. Vance has always been
active in community service – he received the U.S. Humanitarian Service Ribbon in
1989 for helping the victims of Hurricane Hugo.
He is interested in sailing, scuba diving, bicycling, hunting, stained
glass, pottery, and computers.
Patrice Goggins, M.D.
Patrice received her undergraduate degree in Nursing at
Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota
in 1982. Subsequently, she trained as a Nurse
Anesthetist and in 1987 received a Masters Degree in Anesthesiology Education
at Gonzaga
University in Spokane, Washington. She received an additional degree in
Anatomical Science and Neurobiology at the University of Louisville
in Louisville, Kentucky in 1997. She then attended the University of Louisville School of
Medicine and received her medical degree in May, 2000. She is currently completing her clinical base
year at the University
of Cincinnati and joins
us this July to continue training in Anesthesiology. Patrice is interested in scuba diving, enjoys
reading, and speaks Spanish (very useful around here, for sure!!!).
Robert Grant Hollenbeck, M.D.
Born in Hahira,
Georgia, Grant
attended undergraduate school at Valdosta
State University
in Valdosta, Georgia. Following that, he
attended Mercer University School of Medicine and received his M.D. degree in
May, 2000. Grant is also a world traveler
and went on a mission trip to Nicaragua
in 1993 to build a church. Married to
Leslie Hollenbeck, Grant also enjoys fishing, hunting, gardening, working
outdoors and bike riding, and currently, I am told, has a raccoon frozen in his
refrigerator for future anesthesia parties!
Stephanie Hollis, M.D.
Born in Tampa,
Florida, Stephanie attended
undergraduate school at Stetson
University in DeLand, Florida. Following that, she attended
the University of Florida
College of Medicine and received her M.D. degree in May, 2000. Stephanie has conducted clinical research
with the critical care group here at UF.
Her interests are many and include tennis, golf, “the beach”, landscaping,
painting, and sewing.
Stephen
Miller, M.D.
Born in Nürnberg, Germany,
Stephen attended undergraduate school at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Following that, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina and received his M.D. degree
in May, 2000. Stephen has spent much of
his undergraduate career tutoring and teaching his younger colleagues. He was also very politically active at his
school involved in both student government and in the Honor Council. You might want to ask him about a large fish
caught on a recent trip to Alaska!!
Mark Reno, D.O.
Born
in Medina, Ohio, Mark attended undergraduate school at Ohio State
University.
Following that, he attended Ohio
University College of Osteopathic Medicine and received his D.O degree in May,
2000. Following this, Mark completed his
clinical base year training in Doctors
Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He now transfers to the University of Florida
to continue his training in Anesthesiology.
Mark is very interested in team sports – and has played actively in most
of them.
Daniel Schaffer, M.D.
Born in Gainesville,
Florida, Daniel attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate and
medical school training. Daniel received his M.D. degree in May,
2000. Married to Angel Schaffer, much
of Daniel’s time is spent with his wife raising their (currently) three
children. Daniel is also interested in
weight lifting, guitar and travel.
